Americans

It is one of my firmest and most sacred beliefs… that the government of the United States, in both its legislative and its executive arm, is ignorant, incompetent, corrupt, and disgusting… that the administration of justice in the Republic is stupid, dishonest, and against all reason and equity… that the foreign policy of the United States — its habitual manner of dealing with other nations, whether friend or foe — is hypocritical, disingenuous, knavish, and dishonorable… that the American people, taking one with another, constitute the most timorous, sniveling, poltroonish, ignominious mob of serfs and goose-steppers ever gathered under one flag in Christendom since the end of the Middle Ages…

— H. L. Mencken, On Being An American

America is not so much a nightmare as a non-dream. The American non-dream is precisely a move to wipe the dream out of existence. The dream is a spontaneous happening and therefore dangerous to a control system set up by the non-dreamers.

— William S. Burroughs, The Job: Interviews with Daniel Odier, 1969

Secrecy is the original sin. Fig leaf in the Garden of Eden. The basic crime against love… The purpose of life is to recieve, synthesize and transmit energy. Communication fusion is the goal of life. Any star can tell you that. Secrecy, withholding the signal, hoarding, hiding, covering up the light is motivated by shame and fear… As so often happens, the right wing is half right for the wrong reasons. They say primly: if you have done nothing wrong, you have no fear of being bugged. Exactly. But the logic goes both ways. Then F.B.I. files, C.I.A. dossiers, White House conversations should be open to all. Let everything hang open. Let governments be totally visible. The last, the very last people to hide their actions should be the police and the government.
